[Ed's thinking again, but this time she's got a big pad of paper and lots of crayons. Don't ask where she got them. As she thinks, she's sort of mumbling to herself and doodling large colorful shapes.

The mumbling and the doodles don't look like they have anything to do with each other, but knowing Ed, they probably do.]

Lots of little threads all connect together in one big knot, but you can't get to the center without a pair of scissors or a lot of time and patience.

Once upon a time there was a little boy so lost and scared he shut himself away from everything and died.

The queen will sacrifice herself for the king but why? The rooks and pawns have no power and no choice but the queen holds all the power but when she dies the game continues.

Fire destroyed the witch, but what did it do to Gretel?

Worms and knives and walls of all shapes and sizes protecting secrets and lies and...

...names.

[Uh, except Ed already destroyed it. But! To make up for that, we'll say that in the time that Tav was doing her doodles, Ed was drawing more fire. And four figures standing in a circle, glaring at each other. Though one seems a little... incomplete, for some reason. As incomplete as a stick figure can get, anyway.]

There's probably many sides, but this is the only one that matters to them right now.

So right now it's supremacy over one side before going up against anything else... these ones have true mobility but lack power... but there can only be two knights. What happens to the other two?

One thinks they're the king. Whether they are or not, don't know.

The other... could be anyone. Dunno who it is.

[Something rankles her for a moment but it passes quickly.] What brought all this on? What is the root of the struggle?

Something to do with the maybe-king and his disagreement with the knights...

A good king does not anger his knights, for they are his primary defense... as capable with a sword as the king may be, he is meant to lead, not fight.

Why are the king and the knights quarreling?

The knights are bloodthirsty and want to overthrow the king. What else they want is uncertain.

The king... it's uncertain what he wants. But he can't control his men well, if they even are his men, and that makes them angry.

[Frowns again. Thinking. Shakes her head.] If a king is a poor leader, then he will be overthrown for someone more suitable. Such is the nature of leadership. Weakness is not tolerated.
